Glass by Leona

A vendor with Countryside Farmers' Market since 2005.

People: Leah Cistone and Sydne Vargo
Products: Stained glass suncatchers, upcycled wine bottle creations, art glass mosaic mirrors and wildlife art, handcrafted jewelry from glass.
History: I started working with glass 25 years ago when I was the manager of Hazardous Materials Services for a major trucking firm. My interest in glass grew and I have been able to devote more time to my passion. The Farmers' Market has provided me a venue to combine my love of nature and my passion for working with glass.
Sourcing: I try to re-use and upcycle glass whenever possible. I buy most of my glass as factory-throw-aways from the Wissmach Glass Company in West Virginia, just across the Ohio River near Steubenville. The pieces I don't use for suncatchers are saved for mosaics. All my packaging is recycled, except for a minimal amount of purchased tissue.
Methods: To create one piece of art requires drawing a pattern, cutting the glass, grinding the edges, foiling the pieces, soldering them together, adding wire work and hangers, cleaning the piece with soap and water and finally polishing the piece for packaging and transport to you.

Fun Facts: I really didn't choose to work with glass. My best friend talked me into it, and once I got started - I've never looked back!
